International Albinism Awareness Day 2019

Today is International Albinisim Awareness Day a day that I like to share about what albinism is and to celebrate the Human Rights of people with albinism everywhere. In 2014, the United Nations’ General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing June 13th as International Albinism Awareness Day. Awareness of human rights situations of persons with albinism remains fairly limited. This years theme is “Still Standing Strong”.

Albinism is a condition which affects the pigment of a person, this in turn affects their vision and their sensitivity to sunlight.

So much work has gone into demystifing albinism thanks to so many wonderful organisations. There is still so much work to be done as so many individuals still suffer due to the ignorance surrounding albinism and the lack of resources provided to persons of albinism and their families.

Albinism is a unique condition that makes a person stand apart makes them different but these differences should be celebrated. Our diagnosis has made me want to work harder at creating a culture of respect, caring and inclusion in my own home, in my work place and out in the world.

I am thankful to online groups for the support and information they provide and to organisations such as the National Organisation of Albinism and Hypopigmentation for their community, their knowledge and their support. It is amazing what people can do when they come together to make a difference.
